My first trip to Lake Como was by mistake, beginning our journey at Hotel Il Perlo. My husband planned to take me to Italy after he had gone on a business trip to what he thought was Lake Como. We chose Bellagio because of its name. Hotel Il Perlo is nestled on the side of a mountain, overlooking the famous Bellagio bump.

It turned out that he had been to Lake Garda, about two hours from Lake Como. But, it was our good fortune. The owners of the then 2-star, 100-year-old hotel, the Sancassanos, took great care of us. They provided local tips on eating, hiking, boating, and more.

Years of Memories at Hotel Il Perlo

That was 12 years ago. We decided this was the most breathtaking place on Earth. We felt at peace sitting on the terrace at sundown as the lights came on from the many lakes and mountain towns/hamlets. Aside from the COVID-19 travel ban, we have been at least twice yearly. We have experienced every season, and like our kids, we don’t have a favorite…they are all great in their way. But, if you pressed me, it would be the Fall.

We’re from the US (Midwest and East Coast), and our vacations have become increasingly adventurous. We aren’t overly fancy, like blue jeans with cufflinks, and we found ourselves completely and utterly at home in Bellagio as the “home base” and discovering the many sides of the lake and region that most tourists don’t see.

We now proudly operate the 17-room, now 3-star, boutique hotel with a panoramic view that can only be found at Hotel Il Perlo. There are so many distinctive perspectives of the lake from here: The Rockefeller Foundation, the Italian and Swiss Alps, the sea-level towns, the mountain villages, the gardens in bloom, the recreational boaters, seaplanes, and winding roads that leave you wondering how the cyclists do it.
